The Project:

KLH Sustainability worked closely with the project team throughout the masterplan competition period to develop an ambitious sustainability framework for the competition submission for this ambitious tourism project in Saudi Arabia. The framework was built around ten key objectives. The objectives promoted self-sufficiency, with initial modelling identifying how this could be achieved, as well as focussing on reconnecting visitors to nature and encouraging a deeper awareness of Saudi traditions and heritage through design.

Collaboration with the masterplan team ensured that the objectives informed the direction of the masterplan development. The final competition submission included details on how the key objectives were inherent in the masterplan design and proposed a range of indicative targets.

The project team were subsequently awarded the project against strong international competition. KLH attended an initial site visit and provided a set of design guidelines responding to the observed opportunities and constraints. These design guidelines were later supported by detailed analysis of resource consumption profiles and reduction opportunities.
