What We Offer
KLH Sustainability provide a number of services to support clients, developers and contractors to take advantage of the opportunities sustainability presents to business competitiveness in both the short and longer term. We apply a holistic, pragmatic approach in order to add value across a programme’s lifecycle from strategy development through to implementation and legacy. Some of the key services we offer are summarised below:
Strategy Setting
KLH treat each project and each client as unique. While we bring experience from previous projects, we help our clients articulate their own sustainability ambitions and consider the constraints and opportunities presented by a specific project.
From corporate sustainability positioning to individual buildings, we can help to set challenging strategies that respond to the planetary boundaries and core social foundations. Successful implementation of a strategy is a team effort and we take time to ensure that all involved understand and own the ambition.
If you want to be challenged, get in touch – if you are after a little greenwashing then please don’t call us.
Leadership & Training
We love to talk about sustainability and inspire others to action. We empower clients by enhancing their sustainability knowledge, and as curators of the Cambridge University for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) course in Sustainable Real Estate, you can rest assured we know our stuff and never pause in our ongoing learning.
From on-site construction training to thought-provoking leadership sessions, we offer tailored engagement to suit every client's needs.
Performance Modelling
KLH use the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP), Design Builder or IES iCD depending on the specific energy performance questions our clients try to answer. We follow CIBSE TM54 and can establish a comprehensive energy profile for both new and existing buildings.
We are also experienced in the analysis of embodied carbon, using a variety of tools while consistently aligning with the RICS methodology.
By collaborating closely with the wider project team throughout design iterations, we can produce comprehensive life-cycle carbon models to demonstrate achievement of LETI and RIBA targets.
Planning Support
KLH have extensive knowledge of the national, regional and local planning context and the changing expectations around sustainability.
KLH can assist in gaining planning permission by leading the development site specific planning requirements covering sustainability, energy, sustainable construction, climate change adaptation, water, and circular economy.
If you require a statement just to tick a planning box we may not be the right fit, but if you aim to integrate sustainability into your project and present it to planning authorities effectively, please do get in touch.
Research
KLH carry out in-depth research for clients on specific projects or topics. Contributing to siscussions on sustainable aggregates, the use of recycled content in low carbon steel, and limitations of relying on cement replacements for low carbon concrete. Our approach considers the broader system of construction products and supply chains.
Through scientific research and industry consultation, we've developed technical resources used by clients to inform their decision-making.
Sustainable Construction
KLH have helped to deliver award-winning buildings by collaborating with contractors to meet demanding sustainability requirements or by assisting clients in improving contractor performance.
We support integration of sustainability into specification, procurement and construction site management, so if you want to make sure a building delivers the expected performance, we can help.
Standards & Certifications
Navigating the growing list of reporting frameworks and certifications can be challenging. The team at KLH are familiar with a range of building and corporate reporting standards.
While we don't offer standard certifications such as BREEAM, WELL and LEED in-house, we can advise on the aspects most applicable to your projects and integrate them into a ambitious sustainability framework.
Strategic Retrofit
KLH takes a data-informed approach to retrofitting, starting from early stage benchmarking and extending to analysis of data from monitoring and metering. We align our analysis with client emission targets and consider stakeholders' needs, including well-being and comfort f current and future occupants. Supporting facility team through changes is key to realising the full value of retrofit.
Understanding of stakeholder priorities, in addition to the performance of the existing building, is fundamental to a successful retrofit strategy. KLH facilitates discussions among executive and operational stakeholders.
Modelling the retrofit of existing buildings is not an exact science, due to limited data availability and future uncertainties. KLH brings rigour and endeavours to develop modelling approaches that are appropriate to the scale, stage and complexity of the retrofit challenge.
